Classification of tower cranes

2024-12-24

Tower cranes can be classified into multiple types based on different classification criteria, each with its specific application scenarios and technical characteristics. ‌

Classified by whether the chassis has moved or not
Fixed tower crane: fixed on a specially made foundation for fixed-point operation, without a walking mechanism, suitable for situations that require stable operation.
Mobile tower crane: equipped with a running device, it can move and can be divided into track type, tire type, car type, and crawler type according to different walking modes. Rail mounted tower cranes are widely used on construction sites due to their high work efficiency and smooth movement.
Classified by the position of the slewing support
Upper slewing tower crane: The slewing support is set at the upper part of the tower body, which has the advantage of being able to be raised at any time. However, the tower body bears a large bending moment and is prone to shaking, posing a safety hazard.
Lower slewing tower crane: The slewing support is set at the bottom of the tower body, with a low center of gravity, high safety, and easy maintenance, but it needs to be installed at a certain distance from the building.
Classified by Arm Structure
Small car variable amplitude tower crane: The lifting arm is fixed in a horizontal position, and the variable amplitude is achieved through the running small car on the lifting arm, which is suitable for situations that require rapid variable amplitude.
Boom variable amplitude tower crane: Variable amplitude is achieved by changing the elevation angle of the lifting arm, which is suitable for situations where the lifting height needs to be fully utilized.
Folding arm variable amplitude tower crane: Combining the advantages of small car variable amplitude and boom variable amplitude, it is suitable for occasions that require flexible variable amplitude.
Classified by installation method
Quick installation of tower cranes: capable of self installation, improving work efficiency, saving costs, suitable for low rise buildings with short construction periods.
Non rapid installation tower crane: requires disassembly and assembly of auxiliary equipment, suitable for medium to high-rise buildings and places with large working ranges and lifting capacities.
Classified by ascending method
Fixed height tower crane: No attachment device, no longer lifted after installation at a fixed height.
Self elevating tower crane: including attached and internal climbing types. The attached type rises as the building rises, while the internal climbing type climbs inside the building, suitable for super high-rise buildings.
Technical characteristics and application scenarios
Tower cranes are mainly used for vertical and horizontal transportation of materials and installation of building components in construction. Its workspace is large and suitable for various construction needs. Different types of tower cranes are suitable for different types of buildings and construction environments based on their characteristics, ensuring construction efficiency and safety.
